Lot of (9) Rare 1927 - 1940 Fairbanks Alaska Newspapers

Rare opportunity to own a foundational piece of Alaskan history. This is a chronological lot of three original physical issues of the Farthest-North Collegian, the historic publication of the Alaska Agricultural College and School of Mines (now UAF).

Printed right on the edge of the American frontier long before statehood, these issues include: 

September 23, 1927: The historic "Long Count" Fight issue. Features massive front-page sports headlines covering the legendary, controversial Gene Tunney vs. Jack Dempsey boxing championship match from the night before. Also includes a column tracking Babe Ruth's legendary 1927 home run chase.

July 5, 1927: Front page reports on a post-WWI German warship (Emden) arriving unarmed in Juneau for the 4th of July, plus columns tracking polar explorer Commander Richard Byrd in Paris.

July 7, 1927: Covers the tense, stalling diplomatic talks of the Geneva Naval Conference and the tragic crash of a seaplane into Lake Washington.

August 15, 1927: Covers Golden Age aviation tragedies (Dole Air Race testing, WWI Ace crash) and the final hunger-strike days of the infamous Sacco and Vanzetti trial.

May 1, 1931: "Special Mining Issue" edited by the student Mining Society. Features a front-page photo of early pioneers/faculty and articles on active quartz miners in the Fairbanks District.

July 1, 1935: The "Birth Certificate" issue of the modern university. The front page features massive headlines detailing the official legislative transition: "A.A.C. Now University of Alaska." Features portraits of President Charles Bunnell and Andrew Nerland.

January 23, 1936: Tracks the deadly nationwide "Great Cold Wave of 1936" alongside local Alaskan history, including the marriage of Fairbanks Mayor Edward Collins.

February 1, 1939: Features a rare, beautiful aerial photograph of the early campus layout detailing the original dorms, library, and gym, plus a column on pre-WWII artifact exchanges with Soviet Russia.

July 22, 1940: Capturing the immediate local perspective on the brink of global conflict. "BRITAIN ANSWERS HITLER'S PEACE PLEA": Historic coverage of British Foreign Secretary Lord Halifax officially rejecting Hitler's conditional peace offer, setting the immediate stage for the aerial Battle of Britain.

Condition: Good, authentic vintage condition for being roughly 90–95 years old. Expected atmospheric yellowing and edge fraying, but all text blocks, master headlines, and historic photos are completely legible and intact.
