Authentic Alaska Native baleen ship model hand-carved by G. Ipalook of Barrow (Utqiagvik), Alaska in 2014.
This impressive three-masted sailing ship is crafted entirely from bowhead whale baleen, a traditional material used by Iñupiaq artisans of the North Slope. The detailed sails, masts, and rigging are all formed from individual pieces of baleen, and the vessel rests on a carved stand shaped like a whale.
Measuring a substantial 21 inches long and 15.5 inches tall, this is a large, display-worthy example of contemporary Alaska Native folk art. The piece is signed on the hull: “G. Ipalook Barrow AK 14.”
Condition: Excellent. No damage, breaks, or repairs. Clean and ready for display.
